Fay Godwin film photography

Fay Godwin.

Fay was born in Berlin Germany 1931 but shortly moved to England, Fay was a British photographer well known across the UK for her Black and white images of the British countyside and coastal areas.

Godwin first started photography in the mid 1960s But this was only “family snaps” later on she became more engaged in photography itself and her passion for walking created a bias for landscape photography all in black and white.

Godwin was later introduced to the literary scene in London and started to focus on portrait photography, Godwin created dozens of portraits of famous writers, Fay had photographed portraits of almost every significant writer in the 1970s and 1980s.

Fay Godwin never had any photographic education or tuition, she was completely self taught meaning her photography style was original and extremely organic with no variables swaying the way she framed her images other than her mind and what she perseived her outcome to be.

Fays creative ability had most likely stemmed from her mother who was an artist however her father differed in profession massively being a British diplomat.

This image by Fay on the right I decided to analyse.

The central positioning of the camera creates a very over shadowed feeling as iff the trees are folding in on the viewer whist the contrast of the black and white creates a contrast between the natural and man made, the natural light creates a more organic feel whilst the positioning of the composition creates great depth and perspective.
