Steven Dempsey

STEVEN DEMSEY

Dempsey is a dublin born photographer who in 1987 after becoming a musician as a career moved to New York with his band although that did not pan out to well as he ended up trying to pursue a career in painting, this also failed and Dempsey started to try new options such as film making and graphic design this lead Dempsey to photography and his photography eventually got noticed and some was published by the Fujifilm X Magazine and also IKEA, alot of the work hat Dempsey was a noticed for was taken on an iPhone, Dempsey has even accepted awards for his work.

Dempsey has published 4 books called "stills from a dream", "Alaska", "home on the road" and "fifty female faces" showcasing his portfolio and information about images giving him more exposure publicly. The portfolios he has showcased are made up mostly of portraits landscape images and pinhole compositions.

Dempsey is a very Creative photographer far from the digital world he mostly focuses on his black and white work which he is known for, Dempsey also is venturing more into pinhole photography and has begun to experiment more wit photography techniques and styles, Dempsey did experiment with long exposures on digital cameras however in the end found him self at home with original natural pinhole techniques, Dempsey's wife supported him fully and sold their house and most possessions to travel on. a motorbike making it easier for hi to shoot photos across America.
Dempsey feels that the natural pinhole method is the "purest" his work as ever been.

I chose this image by Steven Dempsey to analyse.
This image shows emphasised depth of field due to the positioning of the camera next to the wall, the wet glum weather creates a sense of depression and mystery around the image whilst the blur created by the subjects movement with a long exposure creates a sense of distortion and surreal life, the mellow contrast of the image and over all grey colour in comparison to the dark figure.
